Import Furniture from China to USA

import furniture china usa

If you’d like to import furniture from china to USA – for personal use or resale then you should know there are rules regarding importing furniture into United States that are designed to protect the world from illegal logging.

However, importing furniture from china to USA is not that complex compared to other goods but custom duties and various regulations that need compliance can make the whole import process seem complex.

It is always advised to consult with an experienced customs broker in the USA as he/she can take care of all the import related documentation and customs clearance procedures for a small fee and take care of everything for you.

Let’s have a look the regulations that need to be met in order to import furniture from china to USA:

If you are importing wooden furniture from china then APHIS or The US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service requires all wood entering the country to undergo certain sanitizing procedures in order to prevent non-native pests from entering the country and disturbing the indigenous wildlife.

To learn more about the treatment process and apply to receive the appropriate form for documenting it, the “Timber and Timber Products Import Permit,” visit APHIS.

If in case the wood used in the furniture you’re importing is listed under regulations pertaining to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), it’s subject to some (or all) of the following requirements:

  • A general permit issued by the USDA (valid for two years)
  • Certificates issued by the representative of CITES in the country where the wood was harvested, asserting doing so was not detrimental to the survival of that species and that the goods in question were lawfully obtained.
  • Certificates issued by the CITES representative in the US.
  • Arrival at a US port approved handle shipments of CITES-listed species.

Anti Dumping Duties

The Wood furniture that you are planning to import from China is also subject to anti-dumping duties. According to  the Tariff Act of 1930, the U.S. government can place tariffs on goods sold at less than market value and “dumped” on U.S. markets.

Furniture imported from China is often less expensive than furniture manufactured domestically and that makes anti-dumping rules apply. Wood furniture imported from China is often subject to these extra duties, however, there are some exceptions. For example, wooden headboards and nightstands are subject to extra duties. Tables and mattresses are not, you can read more about it here here .

Other Customs Fees

In addition to the general and anti-dumping duties, there are two fees that apply to all shipments entering US domestic ports: the Harbor Maintenance Fee (HMF) and Merchandise Processing Fee (MPF) which has to be paid accordingly.
